Collision of a field-driven polymer with a post: Electrophoresis in microlithographic arrays.

چکیده
We study the collision of a DNA or other polyelectrolyte chain with a point obstacle in the presence of an electric field via computer simulation. We find a very strong dependence of the average collision time, ktcl, and the average distance traveled during a collision, kzcl, upon the impact parameter, b. Despite the complexities of the chain-post interaction, ktcl and kzcl follow universal curves over a large range of molecular weights and field strengths. This result provides analytic formulas for the chain’s mobility in an array of posts and yields insight into the effect of post spacing.

Long-lived states in electrophoresis: Collision of a polymer chain with two or more obstacles
– We study the long-lived states which occur when a field-driven polymer chain collides with two or more fixed obstacles. For two obstacles we show that below a critical separation distance there are two catenary states, whereas beyond this there are no such states. We further show that for the two long-lived states one is stable and the other is unstable. We introduce a simple model for the dy...
متن کاملDNA electrophoresis in a nanofence array.
We present the design and implementation of an oxidized silicon "nanofence array" for long DNA electrophoresis. The device consists of a periodic array of post-filled regions (the nanofences) alternating with empty channel regions. Even in this prototype version, the nanofence array provides the resolving power of a hexagonal nanopost array without requiring any direct-write nanopatterning step...
متن کاملFluid description of collisional current filamentation instability of a weakly ionized plasma in the presence of magnetic field
In this paper, the collisional filamentation instability of an electron beam-weakly magnetized and ionized plasma has been investigated in the presence of background plasma, using the fluid description. By describing the equilibrium configuration in the presence of binary collision terms between charged and neutral particles and using the local approximation method, the dispersion relation (DR)...
متن کاملDistribution of Residual Stresses in Polymer Reinforced Carbon Nanotubes and Laminated Carbon Fibers
In this study, the distribution of residual stress in fiber-reinforced nanocomposites is investigated. Fiber-reinforced nanocomposite is composed of three substances: carbon fiber, carbon nanotube (CNT), and polymer matrix. Unit cells in hexagonal packing array with different arrays as unit cell, 3*3 and 5*5 arrays have been selected as suitable for finite element analysis of residual stresses....
متن کاملA Method for Simulating Dna Electrophoresis in Electrically Insulating Microfluidic and Nanofluidic Geometries
We present a hybrid boundary element method (BEM)/Brownian dynamics (BD) algorithm for simulating DNA electrophoresis in an inhomogeneous electric field. The accuracy of the method is demonstrated by studying the collision with a finitesized cylindrical post, where the exact solution of the electric field is known.
